How to be a Champ in 2015

How to be a Champ in 2015

If you’re starting to think about your New Year’s goals you’re in luck! 2015 has lots of good karma in store for us all.

I personally like to set for myself a few different goals: a gimme, a reaching goal, and an epistemological (what’s and hows of life) goal. For me, these satisfy my core desires to succeed, be challenged, and to explore.

I’ve dubbed the campaign for this year as my #29actright, which is also known as my 2015 New Year New Life Mission:

  1. Work out consistently (gimme)
  2. Say “No” when I mean No and say “Yes” when I mean “Yes” (reaching)
  3. Value my words like I value my time (epistemological)

The benefit of setting a goal is that it keeps us from slipping in to complacency and apathy, which is where mistakes and errors tend to live.

Get real with yourself!

You have to be honest with yourself about goal setting.

There’s nothing more upsetting than the negative self-talk associated with failure and disappointment – those little voices just love to sneak in our ears and whisper mean and nasty things. They pop up when we go to apply for a new job, when we meet someone interesting, when we pursue our dreams. That’s when you hear the “You Suck” rhetoric that completely halts all progress.

How do you want to feel at the end of the year?

Do you want to feel powerful? Strong? A raving success?

What is it that you want out of this next year?

Maybe you can’t have that million dollar home yet, but you can take proactive steps toward getting it!

What is it that inspires you or keeps you motivated?

Is it participating in a Mr. Universe competition? The culinary culture of France?

Set Yourself Up for Success

This seems like a no-brainer but it’s important to remember to organize your goals up so you can be successful.

What is your gimme goal? Aka, something you’re confident you will not fail

What is your reaching goal? Aka something that is challenging but doable

What is your motivational goal? What will you work toward long-term that is inspiring and keeps your attention

Personally I love working out and being active. This is a lifestyle choice that I make but sometimes I do fall in to patterns of inconsistency which ultimately leads to injury and unmet personal benchmarks. I want to aim for consistency in this lifestyle pattern I have already adopted.

I also know I fall in to that horrible Seattleite habit of overcommitting or flaking on friends and family. I don’t want to do that anymore because I want to communicate to others that I am reliable and that my word has worth.

Also, I want to work on listening more and talking less. This is actually inspired by one of the Ents in the LOTR series where the character Treebeard says “we never say anything unless it’s worth taking a long time to say.” This seems like a good practice and also teaches me to constantly bring mindfulness in my words and thoughts…. This is especially challenging for a chatter-box like me.

Come up with an awesome slogan

Then, the coolest part is giving your set of goals a totally rad slogan or campaign name that gets you JACKED to participate in! Psychologically speaking this makes a huge difference.

Back to my #29ActRight, when I see anything that says “29”, whether it’s a jersey number, an avenue downtown, or on a license plate, I’ll be reminded of my super-sweet 2015 goals over and over again.

Remember: If you’re not pumped, you’re not going to keep these New Year’s goals, friends. Simple as that.

Be Amazing

Sit back and live in the awesomeness of knowing you’ve got the recipe for success in 2015. Give yourself a pat on the back for being honest with what you can really accomplish, in what ways you want to grow, and tuning in to your creativity and spirit. You basically rock.
